Keeping on Top of Cybersecurity

Updated: Oct 9, 2020

It’s been said time and time again, but one of the most in-demand careers in the world is the cybersecurity specialist. Unfortunately, there is a huge gap between the number of professionals needed in this field and the number that are available to fill those jobs.

The bottom line is, there are more job openings than there are specialists to do the work. One of the major problems with the field is that it literally changes on a daily basis as new threats are assessed and new vulnerabilities are discovered and manipulated.

In order to better prepare for these types of jobs so that you can be truly ready, here are some of the things that you can do to stay on top of cybersecurity:

1. Read, read, and read some more—As a cybersecurity professional, you never stop learning. You need to stay up-to-date on the current trends in the field. That means that you need to consume every bit of information that you can. You need to read blogs, updates, professional journals—everything that you can get your hands on. This is the first big start to staying fresh.

2. Know who to follow—Another thing that you should tap into as a professional are other professionals in your field. That means you need to follow cybersecurity experts on social media as well as other influencers in your field. By paying attention to their posts, you can stay apprised of new trends and potential threats as they are being uncovered.

3. Webinars and podcasts—Of course, something as new as cybersecurity may not be as easy to follow using traditional methods such as print articles. That’s why it is important to also follow non-traditional sources, such as podcasts that will give you the opportunity to learn a lot even when you are commuting to work or exercising at the gym. Also, while it is a good idea to attend cybersecurity symposiums and conferences, webinars are much easier to attend, and you can get a lot of quality information this way.

4. Update your push notifications—One last thing that you can do is configure your push notifications to get real-time updates on security threats. Cybersecurity is one of the fastest changing and growing industries out there; so you want minute-by-minute updates of major security threats. Getting regular notifications from forums, news alerts, and subreddits is a good step towards doing this.

If you want to stay competitive in the cybersecurity field, then you absolutely must stay abreast of the major changes as they occur. While everyone is looking for security professionals, no one is going to be looking at you if your security work is outdated and outmoded. Staying educated about the new changes is the key to staying relevant in this endeavor.
